How Cade Martin and POP Creative Studio made THE FIRST Supermarket Scanner Sing for Smithsonian Magazine

Collaboration is always in Cade Martin's cart.

Cade says he's a broken record on collaboration, so when his frequent partner Jeff Campagna at Smithsonian Magazine asked him to check out this project, Cade was quick to pull in amazing talent in the folks of POP Creative to see if they would be interested in teaming up to give a supermarket scanner its due.

POP Creative Studio first used CGI to pre-visualize the layout and composition, providing a detailed guide for Cade to light and photograph the real scanner at the Smithsonian Museum. This planning allowed for the exploration of various compositions in advance and ensured that the CGI and photography were seamlessly integrated in post-production, resulting in a cohesive and striking final image.

This project allowed Cade and POP to blend historical homage with creative flair, resulting in a visually striking tribute to a moment that revolutionized retail forever. Maybe you’ll think of Marsh’s and that first scanner while you swing through the self-checkout next and scan your own pack of gum.
